Where to Ride: Mine Made Paradise Adventure Park
Ultimate ATV riding in Kentucky By the staff of Dirt Wheels
On a recent trip to Knott County, Kentucky, we spent time aboard Kawasaki Brute Force 4x4s, Mules, and Teryx UTVs to check out the new Mine Made Paradise Adventure Park (MMPAP). Recently opened in the fall of 2010, MMPAP is destined to be one of the premier OHV recreation areas in the country, providing enthusiasts with over 200 miles of awesome ATV trails, as well as another 100 miles of non-motorized trails for horses, bicycle and hiking built on 42,000 acres of reclaimed and reforested strip-mine land.
How It Came About The Mine Made Adventure Park was made possible by coal mining and the revenues coal brings to the counties. Knott County, the Kentucky state fovernment, enthusiasts and 12 landowners got together to create the MMPAP and offer a place to ride for the public as well as expand the county's economic diversity. The park itself is not only funded by coal mining, but also created by it. The excess materials from the coal process are removed from hilltops and fill in the valleys to make the land flatter for development, or in this case, recreation. The trails we rode were mostly loffing, haul-truck or oil field roads, and the Knott County ATV Club is cutting ATV and UTV trails daily. This is the best use of minerals we have ever seen. Not only does the coal provide the county with jobs and electricity, it is being used to fund an ATV riding park (via coal severance payments), which in turn will provide even more jobs and revenue to the counties, not to mention create a top-of-the-line adventure park for all to enjoy. Touche, Kentucky.
Mine-Made Features Currently, there are 200 miles of OHV trails on 42,000 acres. Promoters are negotiating with other landowners to acquire another 21,000 acres, on which another 100-plus trails will be cut. Challenging hills, beautiful side-hill trails and ridges, and numerous creek crossings offer opportunities for all skill levels. The fields, hills, and valleys of the Mine Made Paradise Adventure Park will soon be reforested, and in an estimated 10 to 15 years, the land will look like it has never been strip mined at all. It will fit right in with the rest of the Appalachian, only with better ATV trails.
