Knott County
ATV & Mountain Side Emergency Search and Rescue Team
As more and more mountain activities such as ATV'S, Dirt bikes, Side By Sides, Horse Back Riders, Hunters, and even Hikers, or just Campers, come to our county, we have found a need for a Search and Rescue Team.
On Tuesday Jan. 19, 2010, Randall "Moose" Slone, the President of the Knott County Trail Riders ATV Club, called to order the first Meeting, and the start of the first sign up for volunteers to be members of the Knott County, Ky. ATV & Mountain Side Emergency Search & Rescue Team. Attending the first meeting were Randall "Moose" Slone, Trail Riders members Jimmy Mullins and Mary Ross, and members of the Ball Creek Fire Department, Stanley "Jawbone" Slone, Alex "Gummy Bear" Jacobs, Joey Slone, Roger Hall, and Dave Slone.
The meeting started with a discussion of the equipment on hand now. The Knott County Trail Riders Club has acquired a Rhino and an ATR-2 (All Terrain Rescue Trailer) and Rescue Equipment though a Yamaha OHV Grant in 2009. The Ball Creek Fire Department has an Argo (All Terrain Vehicle) and of course rescue equipment. There are also more of our local Fire Departments such as Carr Creek Fire Departments that have Rhino's and ATR-2'S in their stations now.
As the county begins to build this ATV & Mountain Side Emergency Search and Rescue Team, we hope it will help our Fire and Rescue Department will be able to receive grants to acquire the equipment and training needed in this type of off road rescue. As the People of Knott County come together and build this rescue team our Fire and Rescue Department will need more equipment to aid in the off road rescue's. By working together as the whole county we maybe able to help all of our department apply for the equipment they may need.
The team will require that those who participate in search and rescue scenes, to be trained in CPR, First Aids and Rescue Training. These members will also be trained in driving and riding all rescue equipment. These participating members will have training with Randall "Moose" Slone, and members of our fire and rescues departments out on trails with in our county. This will be hands on training.
These participating members will also have training in the use of GPS systems, and the location of trails, and area emergency landing zones with in the county. With this training the team will need participation from the county, in finding and locating trails and the names of areas in the county where people ride ATV's or ride horses or hunt, any where people are off road, that may need emergency help. We never know where something could go wrong and we may need assistance.
The Knott County Trail Riders ATV Club and the Knott County Tourism Group have mapped several areas of the county but not all. This team will need participation from local people to assist in locating all areas of off road adventures. This does not mean people have to join this emergence team, but just be willing to help find and locate areas, in which they know people are using off road and off the beaten path.
This team will only meet several times a year. It will meet and train with each fire and rescue department at their local fire department, for in house training in that area and with that area department to train together, and know what each department needs from this team. The Knott County ATV & Mountain Side Emergency Search and Rescue Team will assist and aide our counties fire and rescue departments not take the place of, so training with each department is necessary.
All departments of Law enforcement, State, County, and Local Police and the 911 Center will also have part in this, as to training and working together with this team. Randall "Moose" Slone will be setting meeting and training dates with all the different department, and then get in touch with the participating members with dates and times. Those wanting to become participating members of this team can contact, Randall "Moose" Slone at home (606)785-4859 or (606)653-3911 which is the number for The Knott County Trail Riders ATV Club.
Please note The Knott County ATV & Mountain Side Emergency Search and Rescue Team will only be an aide and assist Team to our local Emergency departments not take the place of. The Rescue Team will concentrate on locating injured persons and bring them to safety; medical treatment will be the responsibility of the medical professional. This team will still need assistance from the people in Knott County to learn the trails and landmarks and route numbers of all areas in this county. This Emergency Team is for the whole county with help from the whole county in hope of lessoning the number of accidents and mishaps in our county. This team will be here to offer and assist our county when and where needed.
